Echmiadzin Cathedral

Echmiadzin Cathedral, located in the city of Vagharshapat, is the spiritual heart of the Armenian Apostolic Church and a symbol of the country’s deep Christian heritage. Founded in 301 AD by Saint Gregory the Illuminator, it is considered the oldest cathedral in the world. According to legend, Saint Gregory had a vision in which Christ descended from heaven and struck the ground with a golden hammer, indicating the spot where the church should be built. The cathedral’s architecture, with its distinctive dome and cross-shaped layout, has influenced Armenian church design for centuries. It is not only a place of worship but also a repository of religious relics and artifacts, including the Holy Lance and pieces of the True Cross. The complex also includes the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin, the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians, and a theological seminary. Visiting Echmiadzin offers a profound insight into Armenia’s religious history and a chance to experience the living traditions of its ancient faith.
